Team Girls is dedicated to fostering and promoting girls’ participation in sport. It’s about girls supporting girls, building up their confidence, and knowing they’re stronger when they stand together – on and off the court.
Suncorp’s mission is to help more women and girls stay in sport, while encouraging more Australians to back them every step of the way. And we know this mission takes more than just the players. It takes a team.
Partnering with the AIS, we spoke to five incredible female athletes about their greatest supporters. We’re sure you’ll be just as inspired as we are by gymnast Georgia Godwin, para-equestrian Zoe Vorenas, athletics race walker Jemima Montag, wheelchair rugby player Shae Graham and table tennis player Milly Tapper.
Resilience
You know I had an event and I had a few moments where I was like, I really don't think I can do this, and I don't think I this is going to happen like this. And you know the team around me was like, come on like you did it yesterday, you're going to do it again. Like just complete and utter belief in me.
Confidence
Milly Tapper: I’m very lucky for the people that I have around me. So days when I didn't have confidence, they were the ones that sort of pumped me up and kept me going.
Zoe Vorenas: And I think sometimes the times where I have lacked confidence in myself, I've had a really good team around me.
Support
I'd be away competing and the whole town would know that I was away competing, and signs would go up and posters would go up, and it was those sort of little things that were really special. I couldn't really comprehend that you know so many people were so supportive.
Growth
Shae Graham: You go into this sport and it's such like a welcoming community. Um, the guys are super interested in like developing all players, doesn't matter who you are.
Milly Tapper: I've had a lot of people really sort of help catapult my career and keep me in the sport.
