What do red doors mean in Scotland?
5 October 2018
More than just an opportunity for a great Instagram picture, brightly coloured doors can have a lot of symbolic meaning behind them. All around the world, different hues and shades can really vary in what they represent – from deep-seeded, culturally rich meanings, to more, well, shallow reasons.
Do you know why Scottish homeowners paint their doors red?
Traditionally, it’s to show they’ve paid off their mortgage. As the perfect way to celebrate being out of the red.
The red door has many different meanings around the world. Like in Feng Shui, where it symbolises the “mouth” of the house. And invites good chi into the home.
In America, red doors once symbolised a safe stop for travellers.
Being such a vibrant colour, it’s a great way to celebrate being debt-free. Giving you something to do with that paintbrush. Before you go off and paint the rest of the town red, too.
