Comprehensive Car Insurance provides cover for your own car as well as damage to other vehicles and property for which you might be liable. You can, though, add cover for fire and theft damage to your own car on top of your Third Party Property Damage cover.

Frequently asked questions
Generally, Australian drivers have two types of car insurance. One is some form of Compulsory Third Party (CTP) Insurance, which covers costs related to injuries caused in motor vehicle accidents. In some states, CTP is bundled into car registration, in others, it needs to be purchased separately before a car can be registered. You’ll be able to find more details via your state’s traffic authority website.
The second type of insurance is some form of coverage for damage to other vehicles, other people’s property and maybe even your own vehicle. There are many types and levels of cover available, including a few optional covers that may be available with these types of car insurance for an additional cost, but generally they fall into two categories:
- Comprehensive car insurance, which covers damage to your own car as well as damage to other people’s vehicles and property.
- Third party property damage, which covers damage to other people’s vehicles and property if you’re liable for it, but usually won’t cover damage to your own car.
In every Australian state and territory, you’re required to have Compulsory Third Party (CTP) Insurance before you can register your car, and an unregistered car can’t be legally driven on public roads.
However, Aussie drivers are not legally obligated to have any other form of car insurance. Since CTP Insurance only covers injury costs, relying on that as their only form of car insurance can leave drivers exposed in the event of an accident and in some cases, result in huge repair bills for damage to their own car, and maybe even cars and property.
Suncorp Car Insurance is designed to provide you with flexibility to tailor your car cover to best suit your current and changing needs. There are five levels of cover you can choose from:
Comprehensive cover includes accidental loss or damage cover, third party property damage cover and a range of additional features at no extra cost.
Comprehensive Extras includes all the cover of Comprehensive as well as having a range of different optional covers that you can choose for an extra premium (such as windscreen and window glass cover and cover for a hire car after an event).
Comprehensive Advantages is our top level of cover and provides all the cover of Comprehensive with your optional covers being automatically included, some requiring eligibility criteria.
Fire, Theft & Third Party Property Damage cover includes fire and theft cover, third party property damage cover and some additional features at no extra cost.
Third Party Property Damage cover covers legal liability to other people’s property and a range of additional features at no extra cost.
Like all insurances, conditions, limits and exclusions apply. Please refer to the relevant PDS for more details.
Accessories and modifications fitted to your car are included in your policy. If you choose to insure for an amount covered, consider whether the amount you specify to cover your car for is enough to also include the value of the insured accessories and modifications. With Comprehensive and Comprehensive Extras, you can choose the market value* optional cover, and providing we agree to this option, the accessories and modifications will be considered as part of the car when determining the market value of your car at claim time.
We do not insure:
- custom paint
- Nitro or hydrogen fuel
- petrol turbo and supercharger,
- or, roll bar, cage and racing harness.
Please refer to the PDS for more information.
*Market value option is available to new policies purchased on or after 5th August 2021 or renewing policies on or after 8th September 2021.
Any person that you know will drive your car repeatedly should be listed as a driver on your policy.
The exception to this are learner drivers who do not need to be listed on the policy until they get their licence. They will still be covered while driving the car while on their learners and the relevant parts of the PDS will apply to any claim. A standard excess and other applicable excesses apply if the learner is driving at the time of the incident.
It is always better to list any person on your policy who will drive your car, as if you don’t, it may result in an additional excess, a reduction or refusal of a claim. Please note: Learner drivers are not covered to drive a Hire Car obtained under your insurance policy. We also do not cover any driver under the age of 25 while driving a High-Performance vehicle.
Please refer to the PDS for more information.
Yes, any person that you know will be driving your car either regularly or occasionally should be listed on the policy.
If you’re using your car less because you’re self-isolating, you can make changes to your policy that may reduce your premium. This includes increasing your standard excess or changing the average kilometres driven on your policy.
If you’d like to update your policy, you can do so easily via your My Suncorp Account. This step-by-step-guide explains how to do so. Otherwise, please call 13 11 55 to get in touch.
Each of Suncorp's insurance products utilise a five-stage product lifecycle (Design, Delivery, Review, Enhance/Modify and Decommission). This approach allows us to put you, the customer, at the centre of our product development and distribution.

4 To qualify for this additional cover, you will need to show that the driver of your car didn't contribute to the accident, for example by providing a police report, and you must also provide us with the name and address of the person at fault, and the registration number of the at-fault vehicle.
