Are learner drivers covered to drive my car?
Yes, learner drivers are automatically covered to drive your car under supervision, and you don’t need to list them on your policy.
Learner drivers are not required to be listed on a policy and do not attract a separate learner driver excess. If a learner driver is in control of the car at the time of accident, they will incur one of the following:
- an age excess (if under 25yrs old), or
- an inexperienced driver excess (if 25yrs old and over).
Please note: We don’t cover learner drivers to drive a hire car obtained under your insurance policy. Additionally, we don’t cover any driver under the age of 25 while driving a high-performance vehicle. Terms and conditions apply. For the full details, see the Car Insurance Product Disclosure Statement (PDS).
Can a family member make changes to my car insurance policy?
If you’re the policyholder and want to allow someone else to make changes to your car insurance policy, you’ll need to authorise them.
To do this, you can:
- nominate them as an authorised representative, or
- list them as a joint policyholder
When adding a joint policyholder there are some things you should consider:
- We’ll treat any statements, acts or claims made by one policyholder as if it were made by all;
- Only persons with a financial interest or ownership in what is being insured should be added as a joint policyholder;
- Joint policyholders are entitled to benefit under the policy.
After you’ve purchased your policy online, you can call us on 13 11 55 to make these changes.
Will I be covered if an unlisted driver uses my car?
This will depend on the circumstances of each individual claim. Generally, we cover any authorised driver (including a Listed Driver), if they meet the terms in the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS)
Keep in mind that if an unlisted driver is using the vehicle at the time of a claim, additional excesses may apply. For more details, check our Additional Information Guide (AIG).
Do I need to list all drivers on my car insurance?
Yes, all drivers who are likely to drive your car regularly must be listed. The exception is learner drivers, who don’t need to be included.
Keep in mind:
- Listing additional drivers can impact your insurance premium.
- An extra $400 inexperienced or under-25 driver excess may apply, on top of other excesses, if applicable.
- While learner drivers don’t need to be listed, if they are driving or in charge of the vehicle during an at-fault incident, the relevant age or inexperienced driver excess will still apply.
Failing to list someone who regularly drives your car may result in additional excesses or even a reduction or refusal of a claim.
