2022

Resilient Homes Fund

Following devastating flooding, the Commonwealth and Queensland governments have developed the Queensland Resilient Homes Funds – one of Australia’s largest ever investments in resilience, with funding to relocate, retrofit and raise homes. We partnered with the Queensland Government and supported the design and delivery.

Resilience Rd

In beautiful but weather-prone Rockhampton, we found a real street that was ripe for resilience upgrades. We set about taking our learnings from One House to implement a range of practical and affordable modifications. This meant that five local families and their homes could be better able to withstand and recover from future extreme weather events.

2021

One House To Save Money

We partnered with leading scientists and industry experts, CSIRO, James Cook University and Room11, to architecturally design, build and test ‘One House to Save Many’, a prototype house that could withstand Queensland’s extreme weather including fire, flood, storm and cyclone. This project and the accompanying documentary sparked a resilience conversation that continues to this day.

As part of our commitment to help create more resilient homes, we launched an Australian first for home insurance, Build it Back Better™. Having this cover means that if your home is substantially damaged by an insured event, we’ll rebuild it stronger with additional recommended resilience options to help withstand severe weather*.

Community Partnership with Queensland SES begins

Supporting the roll out of community engagement and education programs, funding vital equipment and promoting volunteerism across the state.

2019

Partnership with Get Ready Queensland begins

We’re proud to be the Major Partner of Get Ready Queensland, expanding the reach of the program to assist local Queensland communities to prepare for, respond to and recover from disasters with the help of Suncorp Ambassador, Johnathan Thurston.

2014

Protecting the North Program

We launched the first research partnership with the Cyclone Testing Station at Townsville’s James Cook University (JCU) and Urbis to analyse insurance claims data so we can better understand cyclone vulnerabilities in homes, and what we can do to make them stronger.

2011

Flood Cover

During and after the 2011 Queensland floods we were heavily engaged in flood response and at the time, the only insurer to provide cover for any type of flood. Following the event, the insurance industry introduced a standard definition for ‘flood’ and moved to include cover for flood in home insurance policies. The Queensland Government also invested in updating flood mapping across the state. Brisbane City Council has also established a program to identify properties at risk of flash flooding and suggest actions homeowners can take to reduce damage.
