3 thrifty gift ideas to make your best friend smile
25 July 2018
You don’t need to spend a lot of money to give your best mate the perfect gift. Although a weekend away, or a hot air balloon ride over wine country, or a Michelin starred degustation dinner would be a lovely surprise – savings plans, monthly budgets and the realities of life don’t always allow for such extravagances. Don’t stress – we’ve got you covered.
Here’s some simple ways to treat your best mate, make them smile and most importantly, show them you care.
Our thriftiest top 3 treats for mates
1. DIY anything!
Taking the time to make a card, cook your mate a week’s supply of soup, or some other kind of do-it-yourself gift is a great way to show your BFF all the love. You could even turn it into an event – like a crafternoon – and invite some other pals along to get their DIY on.
There are plenty of tutorials online for how to make thrifty gifts that will blow your BFF’s socks off, whilst also not costing you a whole lot of money.
2. Celebrate the history of your friendship!
We know this might sound a little hokey, but just for a moment entertain your inner child. Every friendship has it’s own quirky inside jokes and memories. One of the best ways to celebrate and treasure your mate is to create a time capsule of your friendship.
Find a small box or bag that you can seal up, then start to collect the things that remind you of your amazing friendship. You might include ticket stubs from concerts you’ve been to, your favourite t-shirt, some photographs and trinkets from your friend-adventures. You could even take a guess at what your future lives might be, where you could be living and what job you’re working in.
Don’t forget to write the date on it and when you’re allowed to open it – maybe in another 5-10 years from now!
3. Send your best friend a postcard – from your home town
We never get mail anymore. And that’s ok – we love how technology makes things so easy. But wouldn’t it be fun to get home and see a postcard from your bestie?
Choose a postcard that you know your BFF will love – maybe a cheesy slice of Australiana with a koala or kangaroo on the front, or perhaps something more stylish and creative.
Put pen to paper and write them a quick note. It doesn’t even need to say that much, but it’s a lovely touch to let them know you’re thinking of them. Or, for that added ‘aww’ moment, you could always send your best mate a happy snap of the two of you with a little note saying how much they mean to you.
If you do want to treat your best mate to a more high-end gift, it never hurts to give your savings account a bit of attention.
