The benefits of being an early riser

Many successful CEOs and entrepreneurs tout the benefits of setting that alarm clock early, but are they right? Are there real, tangible benefits of being an early riser that can actually translate into a business owner’s everyday operations?
It’s true that refusing to snooze can make you more active, happier and more productive. The big problem is that mornings can also be cold, dark, unappealing and easy to put off until, well, tomorrow. So if you need some inspiration to help you spring out of bed and get the most out of your day, here are 4 reasons why becoming a morning person can be worth the initial pain.
1. You get 15 extra days a year
For business owners, finding enough hours in the day can sometimes be a struggle. While it’s quite obvious that waking up early will provide you with more time, did you know that forgoing just one hour of sleep in the morning will equal 15 whole extra days in one year?
2. Your evenings are free (and guilt free)
A lot of us leave those tasks we don’t really want to do until the end of the day (like exercising, for example). Knocking it out in the morning means that you’ve gotten it out of your way, and set yourself up for a more productive day.
It also means that classic debate you have come knock-off time about whether you should relax or head to the gym/answer those emails is gone, and you can feel free to kick your feet up.
3. The world is all yours
We’ve already established that being an early riser is something you have to work towards, and not everyone has the patience or desire to do so. Because of that, you might find that the world is a lot quieter first thing in the morning.
It’s a great space to be able to enjoy some ‘me time’ and uninterrupted reflection, or get into the office (with much less traffic to contend with on the way) and have a burst of productivity before the rest of the world has even woken up.
4. You hit the ground running
When you’re the boss, mornings at work can be rough. Everyone’s firing questions at you and you’re still wrapping your head around how to get caffeinated. That’s why it’s a common practice for top CEOs and executives is to rise – and shine – early. It doesn’t mean you need to start ploughing into emails and spreadsheets at dawn; just clearing your mind and assessing your priorities before other demands start arriving can benefit you immensely.
3 easy(ish) steps to becoming an early riser
Step 1: Time shift. It’s possible to retrain your body to cope with mornings by slowly shifting your bedtime and wake-up time one hour earlier. Start by setting the alarm for 15 minutes earlier for one week and then gradually increase that to an hour.
Step 2: Use the sun. Get outside in the sunshine immediately upon waking. Natural light helps your body to wake up and your mind will soon follow.
Step 3: Ban the snooze button. When your alarm goes off, before your sleepy subconscious tries to woo you into drifting off again, just sit up, then stand up, and, before you know it, you’re awake. Once you’re out of the cocoon you’re unlikely to snuggle back in again – the hardest part is already done. In other words, willpower is all you need.
