‘I’ve got this one’ was a familiar phrase in the Dunkley household. Qld Firebirds midcourter Lara Dunkley and her family are the inspiration behind our new netball campaign.
Suncorp has been Principal Partner of Netball Australia since 2017. Our whole of sport commitment to netball encompasses the junior participation program, Suncorp NetSetGo right through to the elite level, including Suncorp Super Netball and the Australian Diamonds. Our drive to help NA grow the profile and appeal of netball at all levels is inspired by the commitment and sacrifice the players and their families make, in order to achieve their dreams. Our latest campaign tells this story through the lens of one family’s commitment to their daughter and her journey to the elite level of Netball. That story is Lara’s story. Here we chat to Lara and her family about what that commitment has meant for Lara and the Dunkley family as Lara has progressed through every level of Netball.
Living in regional Victoria, Lara’s parents clocked up over 2000km a week, driving her to training and games in Melbourne, so that she could pursue her dream to play in the Suncorp Super Netball League. Watch her story here.
We live in a town called Yarum, located in Gippsland in Victoria and my aunty had seen me play basketball and she was a really good netballer back in the day. She took me down to the local netball
courts and ever since I stood foot on that court it was just the sport that I loved.

That was the first team that I played for was Yarum and I didn't start playing till I was 13 and literally my dream was just to try and be the next best netballer I could be.

As time progressed and I started making teams and having to make bigger commitments with my netball it did mean that we had to drive to Melbourne and seek those coaches.

I was affiliated with a team that required me in Melbourne four times a week and from my little town to Melbourne was a three-hour drive so it was three hours of training and three hours home, four times a week.

If you live in the country and you choose to live in the country you have to be prepared to travel so we decided early on that whatever opportunity came we would sacrifice our own lives and try and make it work for the kids

I just explained to the kids it's not about us it's about you now and we've supported them the whole time but our support's been driven by their their want to achieve.

I suppose driving all those times but you do what you what you have to do for your kids we've had we've had some fun journeys along the way and lots of memories and laughs made but you remember where you come from and i think that really sticks close to the heart.
