Working from home: How to save on car insurance

18 May 2020

For most of us, many aspects of life have changed due to COVID-19, like working from home more and socialising less. But others haven’t – your vehicle may still be at risk of damage from things like weather events or theft.

So even if your car is spending most of its time parked, you’ll probably want to maintain your car insurance. The good news is, if you’re driving less you may be able to save money on your Suncorp Comprehensive Car Insurance premium.

Here’s how!

Increase your excess

When you take out a Car Insurance policy with Suncorp, a standard excess will apply to any claims you make unless your Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) states otherwise.

If you think your risk of making a claim is lower at the moment, perhaps because you’re driving less and your car is secure (if, say, it’s in a lockable garage rather than parked on the street), you could consider adding a voluntary excess.

This would mean that, if you do need to make a claim, the total excess amount you’ll be required to pay is higher than if you’d stuck to the standard excess. But your yearly or monthly premium payments would be reduced – which could mean a pretty handy saving if you don’t have to claim.

It’s easy to update your policy  – just log into My Suncorp or the Suncorp App and follow the prompts.

Be a safe driver

If you’ve been a Suncorp Comprehensive Car Insurance customer for more than two consecutive years, you may be eligible for Claims Free Driver Rewards. For each year you don’t make a claim for an incident in which you were at fault, we’ll reward you with a credit (of up to a maximum discount of 15%) when you renew your policy.

For more information about the credit rates, take a look at our guide to Premiums, Excesses, Discounts and Claim Payments.

Drive less – even after the pandemic

If you’re on the road less than other drivers, why pay the same as them for car insurance? That’s why we reward eligible customers for driving less than 10,000 km each year with a reduction in their premium.

If you’ve found you’re driving less due to COVID-19, and it’s practical, you could keep doing so after the social restrictions ease. Commuting via public transport or bike could help you save money, as well as help you do your bit for the environment!
