MAINTAINING A HOME
Stunning master bedroom trends for 2020
14 September 2020
When decorating your bedroom — as with any home reno — you want to make sure you’re investing in the right areas and making changes that get the biggest bang for your buck.
Pendant lights aren’t just for making the room brighter! They’re decorative elements in their own right. Instead of having side table lamps, get an electrician to install pendant lights hanging from the ceiling over the bedside tables. This frees up space on the tables for your book or morning cuppa.
Pendants add ‘wow’ factor to any bedroom. Natural fabrics, such as hessian or burlap, are very fashionable. For a more elegant look, glass-blown pendants can come in spherical orbs or irregular shapes.
For extra class and throwback to past eras of sophistication, chandeliers are back! A chandelier in the middle of the room can add luxury.
A strip of LED lighting under a side table or inside a wardrobe adds a touch of understated mood lighting.
Built-in cabinetry isn’t just for the kitchen. Remove your bedroom’s clutter and hide it away in beautiful streamlined joinery. Clutter adds to a distracted mind and isn’t a great environment for calmness. The trend of displaying knicknacks on dressing tables and tall boys has long passed.
Floating bedside tables and floor to ceiling wardrobes are statement features and also functional. A joiner can suggest ways of utilising the space in the room. Perhaps you have a lot of shoes? Maybe your partner has too many wetsuits? A joiner can create a storage solution to suit your lifestyle.
The dull greys are a thing of the past. The Pantone colour of 2020 is the calming and confident ‘Classic Blue’, which could make a great feature wall. Darker colours have a relaxing effect in a bedroom, so maybe a soothing green could be more your style.
Rather than paint, your feature wall could be wallpapered. Colour could be introduced in a floral pattern and would look stunning behind the bedhead.
The bedhead can add colour too. Minimalism has made way for luscious fabrics like velvet. The look of matching timber bedhead and side tables is over.
You could also use a rug to add a splash of colour. Even if you already have the standard grey or beige carpet, a bright rug can liven a room.
If space and plumbing allow for an ensuite, you won’t regret investing in one. The convenience of having a bathroom within the bedroom goes without saying. Have the toilet tucked out of sight of the open doorway. The vanity matching the joinery in the bedroom creates a flowing and cohesive look. Also, if space permits, a freestanding bath is the hight of 2020 luxury and coziness.
A large shower with an overhead shower head is a must. The feeling of rainwater falling on you at a comfortable temperature is a lot more comforting than a water-saving high pressure clean.
The bed is the largest piece of furniture in the bedroom, so the colour you choose for the linen will dominate. Pillows, cushions and the bedspread can all be updated easily. If your feature wall is a dominating colour, perhaps go with crisp white linen. Otherwise, the colour of the feature wall can be matched by a colour in the pattern of the linen. The bedspread colour can be updated as the seasons change.
