Are you getting the most out of your Visa Debit card?
6 March 2020
Suncorp has worked hard to bring you as many useful and exciting functions for your Visa Debit card as possible – but what’s the point of all that if they’re not being put to good use? This handy guide is here to highlight some of our favourite functions, as well as help you understand how (and when) to use them so that you’re getting the most out of your Visa Debit card!
Discover what your Visa Debit card can do
Temporarily lock your card
We all know that sinking feeling – you check your wallet, purse or pocket and you can’t find your Visa Debit card anywhere. Did you leave it behind at a café? Has it fallen down behind one of your couch cushions?
While you’re doing a frantic search, you might want to temporarily lock your card to give you peace of mind that if someone finds it before you, they won’t be able to go on any shopping sprees. This can be particularly helpful if you know where it is, but aren’t able to go and collect it right away.
Luckily, we’ve made it super easy to immediately put a temporary lock on your card. All you have to do is log into the Mobile App, go to Manage Cards, then select the card that you need to lock – you’ll see the option to do so there.
Of course, you can unlock it just as easily using the app after you’ve found your card. Depending on where your card was “hiding”, it can be worth keeping an eye on your transactions for a few days afterwards, in case someone has taken down your card details and is doing some unauthorised spending.
Remember, if you can’t find your card and you think you’ve just misplaced it, give us a call on 13 11 55 and we can organise for your old card to be cancelled and a new card issued to you.
Turning off Visa payWave
Visa payWave has been making waves (no pun intended) in Australia for the last 4 years or so, allowing shoppers to just ‘tap’ their card and instantly make purchases of under $100 (and enter your PIN if making a purchase above $100). Although a convenient option for many, it might not be your cup of tea – which is fine! Or, perhaps you love Visa payWave but just want to temporarily turn it off to get in control of your spending.
Again, you can disable payWave on your Visa Debit card at any time using the Mobile App. In the same Card Security section (found by clicking on Manage Cards), under the heading “Card security preferences”, you’ll find the option to toggle on or off your “Visa payWave payments”. It’s that simple!
The Internet has opened us up to an incredibly convenient way of living – and shopping. Although there’s a lot of good that can come from the boundless options available to us with just a click of a button, sometimes that easy access can make spending a bit too easy, making saving difficult.
If you feel like you’re a bit too trigger-happy with online shopping and your budgeting is taking a hit because of it, you can use Suncorp’s Mobile App to help get it under control.
Through the App, and by navigating to Manage Cards, then Card Security preferences, you’ll find the option to turn on and off “Internet transactions”. When off, you won’t be able to use your Visa Debit card to buy anything online or over the phone (including subscriptions and recurring card payments – so make sure you think of those before deactivating this one!).
You can keep it on or off for as long as you want, so your spending (and saving) freedom is completely in your hands.
Spending when overseas
You’ve got your bags packed, passport ready, and holiday mode thoroughly switched on – what else are you missing? Oh that’s right – your spending money! Navigating the whole international currency thing can be a bit tricky, and it’s worth figuring out what the best option is going to be for you when it comes to easily accessing your funds.
You can use your Suncorp Visa Debit card overseas just like you would here, at over 22 million locations (although foreign currency fees and charges may apply, so be sure to check on that). However, if you prefer, you can also use a Cash Passport as a dedicated card just for your holiday spending.
If the latter option is more your style, why not lock your Visa Debit card for any overseas spending? That way if you – heaven forbid – lose your card on a gondola ride in Venice or somewhere amongst the sandy dunes of Marrakech, you don’t have to desperately seek out an Internet connection to put a block on your card.
It’s also a good way of ensuring you don’t reach for that Visa Debit card out of habit and go against the plan you thought of for how you’re going to manage your spending overseas. Of course, since you can easily toggle it on and off through the Mobile App, if you decide you want or need it while you’re overseas, you can easily put it back on again.
You can use this function in the same way you do the others mentioned above – just log into the app, go to Manage Cards, then, under Card Security preferences, you’ll see an option to turn on or off “Overseas in-store payments”.
