Hidden Local Heroes Winners Announced

08 March 2016

Thirteen proved to be a lucky number for volunteers across the country today, when Suncorp Bank acknowledged and awarded $50,000 to the 13 winners of its inaugural Hidden Local Heroes competition.

Victorian resident, Warren Tu, co-founder and director of not-for-profit organisation 300 Blankets, was named this year’s major winner, and was awarded $10,000 in recognition of his unwavering dedication to supporting Victoria’s homeless community.

Since the launch of 300 Blankets in 2012, Mr Tu has dedicated his time to keep the community warm and educate schools and community groups about the realities of homelessness.

Over the years, 300 Blankets has donated more than 7,200 blankets to Victoria’s homeless residents, a success which Mr Tu attributed to the relatability of their cause.

“After food and water, we need warmth to survive. 300 Blankets has been so successful because the need for warmth is something that everyone can appreciate,” Mr Tu said.

Suncorp Bank Head of Personal Customers, Lynne Sutherland, was thrilled to award the deserving volunteers, and said Mr Tu, and the other winners encompassed the values the Hidden Local Heroes competition represented.

“The volume and calibre of the nominees was outstanding, and having to select 13 winners from 146 nominations was no easy feat for the judging panel,” Ms Sutherland said.

“Suncorp Bank was proud to acknowledge and support such outstanding members of the community. This competition highlighted the amazing people in our communities who work hard every day to support those in need and make a difference in the lives of others.”

Michelle Lister, a volunteer at Save a Horse Australia, was the People’s Choice Award winner, and received $7,000 for her dedication to providing around the clock care for injured horses.

Hidden Heroes were uncovered all over the country with 11 runners up also being announced, all receiving $3,000.
