Even when you're out of the house, you can be covered for the accidental loss or damage of personal items you carry with you. Just add Personal Valuables Cover to your Contents policy. There's an additional premium for this option and the Product Disclosure Statement spells out how it works including any limitiations that may apply. 

Personal Valuables covers you anywhere in Australia and New Zealand. Jewellery and watches only are also covered anywhere in the world for up to 30 consecutive days, while worn by you or in a secure safe.

What kinds of events does Content Insurance cover?

Every level of Suncorp Contents Insurance covers loss or damage to your contents caused by  the insured events listed below.

The below is a summary only. For a more detailed list of what's included and the exclusions and limits apply, please read the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS).

Flood

Flood means the covering of normally dry land by water that has escaped or released from the normal confines of things like a lake, river, reservoir, canal or other natural watercourse.

Actions or movements of the sea or storm surge are not covered.  

Storm

A storm can be accompanied by strong winds, rain, lightning, hail, snow or dust.

It includes loss or damage caused by a landslide or subsidence within 72 hours of, and directly because of a storm and not because of erosion over time or a structural or design fault.

Fire

Fire means burning with flames. It also includes heat, ash, soot and smoke damage to your contents from a neighbouring building burning within 10 metres of the insured address. 

It doesn’t include arcing, scorching or cigarette burns unless a fire spreads from the initial burn spot. 

Pollution or vapour damage from a portable or unfixed home heater or cooking appliance is covered if a fire spreads from the initial source.

Malicious acts and vandalism

Loss or damage to your contents caused by malicious acts or vandalism.

It doesn’t include damage caused by someone who lives at the insured address or who entered the insured address with your consent.

Impact

Impact covers damage caused by impact from things like a falling tree, power poles, tv antennas, aircrafts, motor vehicles and even space debris. 

It doesn't include damage caused by trees being lopped, felled or transplanted by you or for you.

Theft or burglary

Theft or burglary occurs when someone enters the insured address without your consent and steals or intends to steal items. 

We don’t cover loss or damage caused by thieves or burglars entering the insured address from common property without signs of forced entry, or loss or damage caused by anyone living at the address or someone who enters the insured address with your consent.

Damage by an animal

This covers loss or damage caused by an animal at the insured address that you or anyone at the insured address does not own or are not responsibe for (e.g. if an animal enters the insured address and becomes accidentally trapped inside the home). 

It doesn't cover damage caused by insects, vermin or rodents.

Riot, civil commotion or public disturbance

An example of a riot, civil commotion or public disturbance event would be damage caused by a violent crowd moving down your street. 

It doesn't cover loss or damage caused by someone who had consent to enter the insured address and doesn't cover loss or damage if anyone living at the insured address participated in the disturbance.

Explosion

We cover loss or damage caused by an explosion but we don't cover the cost of repairing or replacing the container or tank that exploded.

Escape of liquid

This covers the sudden liquid leaking, overflowing or bursting from things like your fridge, washing machine, bath, toilet, fixed pipes (except agricultural pipes), gutters, swimming pool, water main, fixed cooling system or an aquarium.

We do not cover water damage caused by wear and tear or the gradual leaking of liquid. See PDS for more details.

Lightning

Lightning, including power surges caused by lightning, will be covered providing a qualified repairer gives written confirmation to show lightning as the cause of loss or damage and the Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology has a record of lightning in the area at the time of the loss or damage.  We do not cover loss or damage caused by power failure or surges by your power provider.

Accidental breakage of glass

This covers things like breakage of fitted glass in furniture and unfixed hung mirrors. When you are a tenant under a lease which holds you legally responsible for accidental damage we also cover accidental breakage of glass in windows and other fixed glass, show-bath combos, toilets and glass that forms part of a fixed cooking or heating applicance. 

It doesn't cover things like ceramic tiles, drinking glasses or glass that is part of things like vases, ornaments or light globes.

Earthquake and tsunami

We cover damage that occurs within the first 72 hours following an earthquake or tsunami. 

This includes cover for damage caused by a landslide or subsidence within 72 hours of, and directly because of, an earthquake or tsunami. It doesn’t cover damage caused by erosion over time or a structural or design fault.

In the first 72 hours of your policy we don't insure you for bushfire, storm, flood or tsunami. Very limited exceptions apply.

Safety Net

If you choose to include the Safety Net feature you’ll be covered for up to 25% or 30% extra towards the unexpected rising costs of repairing or rebuilding your home when you make a claim. 

For example:

  • if your sum insured is $400,000 and you have a 25% Safety Net, you’ll be covered for an additional $100,000 (or $500,000 in total) towards repairing or rebuilding your home; or
  • if your sum insured is $400,000 and you have a 30% Safety Net, you’ll be covered for an additional $120,000 (or $520,000 in total) towards repairing or rebuilding your home.

Personal valuables

Personal valuables are some of the valuable things you might leave the house with. It’s things like your mobile phone, camera, laptop, or tablet. It also includes bicycles (as long as you’re not racing or pace making).

With personal valuables, the items are covered anywhere in Australia and New Zealand.

You can choose whether to specify the items so as to cover them up to a specified value, or if you’re happy to have unspecified cover, we pay up to $1,000 per item.

Temporary accommodation

If your home is damaged by one of our insured events, and we agree it cannot be lived in, we’ll pay for reasonable temporary accommodation costs for you, as well as boarding for your pets, until you can move back in. Please read the PDS for full details on the maximum period we will pay for your accommodation.

Removal of debris

We'll cover the cost to dispose of your damaged contents after an event that we cover.

Food and medication spoilage

We’ll cover spoilage of refrigerated food, frozen food and refrigerated medicines. Conditions apply.
