Is car insurance compulsory in Australia?
In every Australian state and territory, you’re required to have Compulsory Third Party (CTP) Insurance before you can register your car, and an unregistered car can’t be legally driven on public roads.
However, Aussie drivers are not legally obligated to have any other form of car insurance. Since CTP Insurance only covers injury costs, relying on that as their only form of car insurance can leave drivers exposed in the event of an accident and in some cases, result in huge repair bills for damage to their own car, and maybe even cars and property.
