Debit cards -  Visa vs. eftpos

What's the deal?

Banking terms are confusing. We get it. It helps to think of an eftpos card as a way to access your money, instead of using cash. You need to be present to use your card – like in a store. A Visa Debit card allows this too, but also lets you make purchases online and overseas.

Funds

Both eftpos and Visa debit cards use existing funds from your bank account (that means money you already have).

Region

eftpos is used in Australia only, whereas you can use Visa debit cards internationally as well.

The web

You can shop online with a Visa debit card, but eftpos is for in-person transactions only.

On the go

A Visa debit card lets you pay with payWave, Google Pay and Apple Pay. With an eftpos card you can pay with Tap & Pay and Apple Pay.

ATMs

Both eftpos and Visa debit cards let you withdraw cash from ATMs, local post offices6, and supermarket chains.

Safety

Both eftpos and Visa debit cards are embedded with the latest EMV microchip technology, which provides both data protection and transaction security, for greater protection.
