From Mail Room to Design Room

17 June 2015

Suncorp Bank will inject a sense of style into the banking and finance industry next month, when it unveils a new corporate uniform designed by former employee and acclaimed Australian designer, Juli Grbac.

Before bursting onto the global runway, the Brisbane-based designer started her career in 1999 in the mailrooms of Suncorp Bank, where she worked to support herself through design school.

Her days sorting mail came to an end when the aspiring designer won hit television show Project Runway Australia. From there, the collections of her eponymous label have been stocked in many influential retailers and paraded at fashion shows across the country

Recently returning to her hometown of Brisbane, Juli said she was thrilled to collaborate with Suncorp Bank on the new uniform launch.

“It has been an exciting journey to work with Suncorp Bank again and to create a new, vibrant corporate wardrobe that’s distinctive, smart and sophisticated,” Ms Grbac said.

“The way you feel in your clothes everyday has a huge impact on they way you feel coming to work. For Suncorp Bank, I wanted to create something that took into consideration personal comfort, the diverse roles performed by staff, and the national profile of the Bank.

“We invited staff to sample the outfits and share their feedback throughout all stages of the design process to ensure we created something that made everyone feel and look great.”

Suncorp Bank Head of Personal Customers, Lynne Sutherland, said she was proud to have a former employee play an integral role in the uniform transformation.

“Having previously worked for Suncorp Bank, Juli had a strong understanding of what our brand represents and was able to incorporate these insights into the creation of the new uniform,” Ms Sutherland said.

“The new look is a refreshing change for staff, and reflects Suncorp Bank’s professional approach to supporting our customers across the country.”

Juli Grbac’s corporate portfolio is fast growing, having also been behind Virgin Australia’s highly praised uniform re-design in 2010.

“I entered the fashion industry because I wanted to make people ‘feel good’. I am thrilled I get to do that by reaching thousands of people everyday when they put on a uniform I created to come to work,” Ms Grbac said.

Juli Grbac’s corporate styling tips:

  1. Comfort is the most important factor in choosing an outfit for work. Ensure your clothes are well-fitted and your movement isn’t restricted.
  2. Dress for the climate you are in. A colourful scarf, blazer, or opaque stockings are great additions to any corporate outfit to keep you looking smart from summer to winter.
  3. For a polished look, black closed in shoes are a must. To fit the Australian climate, invest in a breathable leather shoe which will last you through the seasons.
