Students Get a Taste of Life on the Silver Screen
17 August 2015
Elanora State School’s budding filmmakers could find their big break into the industry when the 2015 Queensland Touring Film Festival (QTFF) kicks off its four-month regional roadshow on Wednesday, 19 August, sponsored by Suncorp Bank.
Launching on the Gold Coast, QTFF will travel to 15 regional communities across the state giving students an opportunity to explore their creative skills through a series of film workshops and movie events.
Local filmmaker and QTFF Director, Jed Cahill, said students would bring their own stories to life using the magic of the green screen, cutting-edge digital effects and a professional editing suite.
“Filmmaking is a fun, powerful tool to help students discover their creative talents, imagination, and story-telling skills,” Mr Cahill said. “The students’ films will be shown, along with a selection of short films, at pop-up cinemas open to the public during the roadshow.
“The festival program spans approximately five days in each community, bringing a mix of entertaining and challenging cinema, including Academy-Award winning and nominated short films.
“With the support of companies like Suncorp Bank we can continue to deliver this opportunity to children living in regional and rural areas and inspire, educate and entertain people through the arts.”
Suncorp Bank Regional Manager, Danniele Sim, said Suncorp Bank has bolstered its support for QTFF, with the introduction of the ‘Suncorp Bank Future Filmmaker Award’.
“QTFF delivers cultural enrichment to communities in regional Queensland, and Suncorp Bank is thrilled to be aligned with the tour for a second year as it travels throughout our home state,” Ms Sim said.
“This year we have introduced a competition to reward six students who show outstanding originality, creativity and skill.
“The prize includes a three-day intensive workshop with Australian Film Television and Radio School (ATFRS) in Brisbane, including flights and accommodation. It is not everyday a school student living in regional Queensland gets the opportunity to learn from some of the country’s best in the business.”
Competition entries are now open and will be judged by Triple J film reviewer and SBS’s The Feed host, Marc Fennel, along with Australian actor and former Home and Away star, Brenton Thwaites.
Brenton Thwaites, who has just wrapped up filming with Johnny Depp on the Gold Coast set of Pirates of the Caribbean, is expected to make a guest appearance to the local Elanora State School QTFF workshop on Wednesday, 19 August.
