Helping scientists in the fight against skin cancer
Two out of three Australians will be affected by skin cancer, causing Australia to have the highest rates of skin cancer in the world. Suncorp, through its SunWise program, is working with the Queensland Institute of Medical Research (QIMR) and Western Australian Institute of Medical Research (WAIMR) to educate communities on the dangers of skin cancer and the vital importance of prevention, via grass roots programs, on-line education; partner programs; fundraising activities; and a SunWise Ambassador program.
Queensland Institute of Medical Research is a world-class facility regarded as a centre for excellence in cutting-edge medical research. QIMR scientists continue to make significant discoveries in the fight against skin cancers. The program’s significant achievements were recognized in 2007 when Suncorp and QIMR were awarded the Queensland Prime Minister’s Award for Community Partnerships. Suncorp has supported the QIMR skin cancer laboratories for 5 years.

Western Australian Institute for Medical Research is Western Australia's premier adult medical research institute, investigating the genetic and environmental causes of a range of diseases. Formed in 1998 with a vision of fostering a high-level of collaboration between the State's medical researchers, WAIMR has made, and continues to make, a number of internationally-important discoveries with the potential to deliver better health to the global community.
The Scott Kirkbride Melanoma Research Centre, based at WAIMR, aims to establish world-class resources to investigate melanoma, with the goal of pinpointing the genetic and environmental causes of the disease. The SKMRC was established in memory of young Perth golfer, Scott Kirkbride, who lost his battle with melanoma in 2004 at the age of 27. Suncorp announced its partnership with WAIRM in March 2009.
