Australian Fixed Interest and Cash
When it comes to managing Australian fixed interest and cash assets, at Suncorp Investment Management we take an active approach with the aim of giving you:
- above average returns
- below average volatility
We do this by maintaining a variety of different investment processes - together with risk controls - rather than relying on one single approach to generate returns. For example, your portfolio might include a mix of strategies like:
- long-term strategic duration positioning
- short-term tactical duration positioning
- yield curve strategies
- sector selection
- stock selection
We tailor a solution that fits your specific risk and return objectives, choosing the processes that will add most value to your portfolio. You also benefit from the reduced risk that comes from diversifying across a range of processes.
It's an approach that gets results. Check out our impressive Australian fixed interest and cash performance below.
We also give you something that most fund managers shy away from - a genuine, no-nonsense relationship. You can expect regular, straight-to-the-point explanations of how we're working towards your investment goals.
Investment Process
When you invest in Australian fixed interest and cash with Suncorp Investment Management, you access a disciplined and diversified investment process:
We provide you with market direction. We analyse domestic and global economies to anticipate changes in interest rates and yields. We can add value to your portfolio by anticipating these changes and altering the average maturity or duration period.
We analyse on a sector basis. We do economic and quantitative analysis on Commonwealth, State Governments and Corporate bonds. We allocate to the strongest sectors based on economic and quantitative analysis.
We've got skilful stock pickers. We undertake quantitative analysis to identify "mispriced" securities. We evaluate corporate bonds based on strength and quality of management ,cashflows and business model. And we consult with our Australian equities team to get another perspective on Australian named corporates before we transact.

Global Macro Solutions
Suncorp Investment Management (SIM)'s Global Macro/GTAA trust is a wholesale fund designed for the flexible delivery of active excess returns from the Global Macro/Global Tactical Asset Allocation (GTAA) space. The fund utilises both long and short exposures to equity market indices, government bonds and currencies from the major liquid markets in the developed world. These exposures are obtained using futures contracts and foreign exchange forwards.
Investment Objective
The fund has an annual return target of 10% in excess of the Australian Bank bill return, while maintaining an annual standard deviation of less than 10%. Inception of the trust occurred in September of 2004. As at March 2006, the trust's returns are averaging 14.1%pa (8.5% active) with an annualised monthly standard deviation of 5.6%.
Philosophy
Exploitation of return predictability when magnified by careful diversification can consistently produce outstanding risk/return outcomes.
Investment Style
We are 100% quantitative. Sourcing our ideas from the finance and econometrics literature, we utilise our extensive experience in real time modelling and forecasting for both strategy generation and risk control. We exploit return predictability at a range of frequencies starting at daily through to business cycles. All positions are reassessed daily and adjusted accordingly. These adjustments can be either strategy changes or fine tuning position sizes to directly control the fund's risk profile and optimise diversification. Adjusting positions every day emphasises the need for a world class execution capability. We execute all trades via our in house electronic execution platforms. This enables us to greatly reduce our transaction costs. It also allows us to measure and analyse all aspects of our execution capabilities.

We aim to provide you with strong long-term capital growth by optimising the risk and return trade-off of investing in the global sharemarket.
We take a global approach to investing. Our investment approach is to select leading managers with a global perspective rather than a regional focus. This means that investment opportunities are not constrained by regional boundaries.
We manage the risk of your portfolio to make sure we minimise your exposure. We do this in three ways:
- appointing managers who are industry leaders
- blending managers to ensure consistency of performance and diversification and
- adopting a rigorous program to manage risk.
Investment Structure
Following an extensive research process, the Suncorp Investment Management World Equities Trust (WET) has recently undergone a significant makeover involving a change in the manager line-up. The changes are designed to enhance performance with no additional cost to the investor or change in the investment objective.
The 'new' World Equities Trust is structured with two global growth managers, two global value managers and one global emerging markets manager. These managers have long-term track records and a demonstrated ability to consistently perform throughout the investment cycle and aim to deliver benchmark outperformance.
