Graduate Careers at Suncorp

General Insurance Graduate Program

Suncorp’s purpose is to ‘help people build and protect their dreams’ – and insurance is the ‘protect’ part of the deal.  It’s essentially a promise that we will support our customers in their time of need and help restore things back to the way they were.

Suncorp’s Commercial Insurance (CI) Business Unit delivers this promise by providing a range of business insurance solutions to small and medium sized businesses, as well as large corporations. CI has a national presence in the market, with products distributed under brands including Suncorp, GIO, AAMI and Vero, through both direct channels and indirectly through our partners and advocates like insurance brokers.

The General Insurance Graduate program provides an opportunity for a graduate to work across the insurance lifecycle - from product design and risk analysis, to distribution and sales, or the management of claims for our customers in their time of need.  This could include analysing the performance of our product portfolios, working on the development of new sales channels and strategies, or managing relationships with brokers, corporate partners and customers.

General Insurance Graduate Development

To help you actively build your performance our development program will offer:

  • The opportunity to complete a Financial Services industry qualification
  • Rotations in various divisions across Commercial insurance to give you exposure to Strategy, Portfolio and Distribution.
  • A tailored career development plan with regular mentoring sessions with your leader
  • Professional development activities to build your foundation skills (e.g. project management, communication) and business acumen
  • A leadership team which encourages innovation and listens to your ideas and initiatives
  • A Mentor who will help guide your transition into the corporate environment, challenge your thinking and support your career development
  • A Buddy to help you 'learn the ropes'. They'll help you to understand your role and meet new people

Supported – Through leaders, experts and the CI Learning Campus, we will provide valuable support to learners and a range of learning opportunities that include:  instructor-led sessions, online learning, on –the-job coaching and buddying and self paced study options.

My Story

   Matt  Name: Matt
Degree: Bachelor of Commerce / Bachelor of Business Management
Majors: Finance & International Business
Role: Business Support Officer - commercial Insurance

Why did you join Suncorp and the Graduate Program?

I joined Suncorp because I wanted to work for a company that would give me the foundation I needed to develop my career in a ‘Top 20’ Financial Services Company.  Suncorp immediately stood out because of its reputation and its values. I felt culturally Suncorp was a good fit for me because of these values coupled with the opportunity to work with Australia wide brands such as AAMI and GIO.

Is life at Suncorp everything you thought it would be?

Life at Suncorp has been everything I thought it would be and much more! Even as a graduate I have had the opportunity to work closely with Senior Managers on projects, allowing me to broaden my business acumen and build my networks throughout the business.

What have you been up to since you joined?

Since starting I have been fortunate enough to have had exposure in all areas of Direct Distribution and some parts of Intermediated Distribution in Commercial Insurance. Each rotation has been varied and challenging, my first rotation was helping implement an online learning program for all parts of Direct Distribution. I then moved into the analytics area, which saw me producing weekly and monthly reports for our Executive General Manager. Then it was onto customer experience area, where I helped out with online competitor analysis and SEO/SEM ranking development and improvement. I am in my fourth rotation now working in the underwriting area on the operational reporting and reward and recognition programs.

What's the best thing that's happened to you since you've been at Suncorp?

Was being invited to help organise and participate in our Leadership Conference. Over the three days I was able to network and interact with over 100 leaders from across Australia and participate in a number of activities with them. This really helped to broaden my perspective and acumen as I was able to experience firsthand the challenges the leaders were facing with their respective businesses at a tough time in the Financial Services Industry globally.

What are some of the challenges you have faced?

Working with several different brands simultaneously has been a challenge, at times it felt like I was just getting a solid understanding of an area and it was already time to move onto another part. Being able to control these switches in focus combined with learning all the systems the different businesses use and the jargon that comes with them has been challenging.

In three words, how would you describe your team?

Dynamic, Fun & Supportive

Where do you see yourself within Suncorp in 3 years time?

Commercial Insurance is an extremely interesting and complicated business that is constantly changing. As such I see myself progressing into a Strategic Advisor/Specialist role where I can keep building on the skill set I have, and help make a difference within CI.

How is the Suncorp Graduate Program preparing you for your future?

The Graduate Program has given me a real opportunity to network and experience many different areas of Commercial Insurance. Being on the program has allowed me to combine what I learnt at university with the functionality of real world business. The Graduate Program has helped in broadening my knowledge and acumen by shaping my thinking and approach to challenges from the varied business experiences I have had on my different rotations, all of which I feel will help me to become a successful business leader in the future.

Why did you join Suncorp and the Graduate Program?

I joined Suncorp due to its reputation as a great organisation.  I was attracted to the Grad programme because it gives me the opportunity to further my development and also provides an excellent platform into any number of roles within the organisation.

Is life at Suncorp everything you thought it would be?

Yes, I have thoroughly enjoyed the culture and people in this organisation.  I have been giving interesting and challenging opportunities since I started.

What have you been up to since you joined?

I spent my first rotation working in an analyst role in Direct Distribution.  This gave me a strong insight into the direct commercial business.  I am now working in SME underwriting services in the Business Operations team.  During my time in SME underwriting services I have worked on projects as diverse as productivity analysis and report building to organising a leadership conference.

What's the best thing that's happened to you since you've been at Suncorp?

I would say meeting all the wonderful people in this company.  Everyone has been very inclusive and been willing to take the time to help me along my journey.

What are some of the challenges you have faced?

The graduate programme throws up many challenges but the most difficult would be adapting and learning a new role and environment every six months.

In three words, how would you describe your team?

Professional, Fun & Innovative

Where do you see yourself within Suncorp in 3 years time?

Not too sure, hopefully continuing to enjoy my work and helping to shape the future of Suncorp.

My Story

hien     Name: Hien
Degree: Bachelor of International Business/Bachelor of Commerce
Majors: Business Statistics and Forecasting/Economics
Role: MI Solutions Officer

Why did you join Suncorp and the Graduate Program?

I wanted to stay in Brisbane, my home town, but also wanted to have the opportunities to work in an Australian-wide company with its headquarters in Brisbane, knowing that the opportunities within such an organisation would be more extensive. Suncorp was the best option and joining the Commercial Insurance unit has allowed me to be based in Brisbane, but also have the opportunity to travel interstate as our brands are recognised everywhere in Australia.

Is life at Suncorp everything you thought it would be?

It definitely has been. It’s the culture, work and people which makes me want to come to work every day.  I have enjoyed the challenges and opportunities I have been given to develop and progress my career, while enjoying it along the way.

What have you been up to since you joined?

I was a graduate for 1.5 years in the CI Direct Distribution channel where I received the opportunity to rotate into three roles, all different in its own way, from understanding the expenses to sales and performance and then to customers’ experience for the area. Since then, I moved to the MI (Management Information) & Reporting Innovation team working on projects to help improve the information provided to the CI business.

What's the best thing that's happened to you since you've been at Suncorp?

There isn’t one thing, because most things that have happened since I’ve joined Suncorp have been great. I think this is because every leader I have had have been extremely approachable, helpful and understanding, making work enjoyable and not seem like a chore.

What are some of the challenges you have faced?

One of the biggest for me is to learn how to do coding in a statistical software program (SAS).  Coming from a background where I’ve never seen coding before (or when I did, I would quickly close it and imagine it wasn’t there) it was quite daunting.  However, now that I’ve been given the opportunity to learn and utilise it on the job, it isn’t as intimidating anymore and it will definitely increase my employability by many folds.

In three words, how would you describe your team?

Awesome, Amazing and Enthusiastic

Where do you see yourself within Suncorp in 3 years time?

I see myself as being a Business Analyst/Advisor within CI and being able to provide management with information to better understand and improve their business.

How is the Suncorp Graduate Program preparing you for your future?

Having been on the graduate program for three rotations really gave me the opportunity to experience first-hand what business really means in the real world. From it, I was able to truly understand what I liked and wanted in my career as well as how to get there. This was a really important stage for me and I can say for sure that if it wasn’t for the program, it might have taken me much longer to find what it is that I really want in my professional life.
