My Story

   Derrick  Name: Derrick
Degree: Bachelor of Commerce / Bachelor of Economics
Majors: Accounting
Role: Graduate Accountant

Why did you join Suncorp and the Graduate Program?

I joined Suncorp because it is the one of Queensland’s biggest public entities. I wanted to be based within Brisbane and Suncorp is naturally the best company to be in. The Suncorp Graduate Program promises rotation within the Suncorp finance community and as I have always wanted to experience the different facets of accounting, I find the program really attractive.

Is life at Suncorp everything you thought it would be?

It is better that I have expected! The people are extremely friendly. The teams that I have worked with have been really supportive. There are much learning and at times tight timelines, but my team members are always willing to guide me. That gives me the confidence to try new things and also the empowerment to do my tasks competently.

What have you been up to since you joined?

I started off in Suncorp Banking where I was exposed to bank specified month end reporting. While in the Bank, I was also seconded to the Banking Strategy team. I was involved in the due diligence process of selling Suncorp Bank’s non core portfolio. That was an eye opening experience as I got to interact with many external business partners and had to travel interstate extensively. After which I went to Group Finance and was with the Budgeting and Forecasting team for 5 months before going to Accounting Services where I got involved in expense reporting and payroll. I am currently backed in the Bank in the area of finance control.

What's the best thing that's happened to you since you've been at Suncorp?

I think the best thing is being able to rotate to the different teams. I enjoy being able to learn new things and meet new people. In the process, I have met some really good friends. I love my team, they are not only my colleagues, they are my friends.

What are some of the challenges you have faced?

Every new task can be a challenge as well as an opportunity. I choose the latter. But one of my biggest challenges is adapting to changes. Each time I was rotated, it was a new environment with new people and new tasks. I have to adapt and pick up the skill quickly so as to contribute to the team as soon as possible. The friendly and supportive culture in Suncorp has made my transition so much easier.

In three words, how would you describe your team?

Focus, Supportive and Empowering.

Where do you see yourself within Suncorp in 3 years time?

I would have finished my CPA. I see myself functioning in higher capacity and will be involved in training and guiding others. My exposure to the different teams would have given me a good view of the business and I will use this understanding and connection with people to increase the efficiency of our processes. I also want to make our processes more visible and simple so that it will be easily understood by our various stakeholders as this will empower them to suggest changes that will make the processes even better.

How is the Suncorp Graduate Program preparing you for your future?

I have been with Suncorp for just over 1.5 years and I have already been involved in 5 roles. The exposure has helped me identified what I really enjoy and I will be developing my career towards that direction.

My Story

ann     Name: Ann
Degree: Bachelor of Commerce / Bachelor of Arts
Majors: Accounting / French and International Relations
Role: Graduate Accountant

Why did you join Suncorp and the Graduate Program?

I was interested in looking at different areas of accounting, and the future potential to move between departments and experience a range of roles. I have found my team leader and manager take an interest in what direction I want my career to go in. I haven't decided absolutely yet, but they do ask me regularly if they are providing everything I want/need and have asked whether there is anything I would like to do in the future. They encourage further studies but do not force you into them immediately if you want a break. I mentioned my desire to know the organisation and other departments better to my team leader and she said she would keep me up to date with opportunities to do this, for example through Suncorp's internal training days,' Lunch and Learn' sessions and other initiatives.

Is life at Suncorp everything you thought it would be?

Yes, it has been a great workplace to enter after uni. They don't expect you to know everything when you arrive and are open to questions. The people are very supportive. They have been flexible about my working hours. I have been able to start early and leave early giving me a better work-life balance. There is a real variety of people here. In the interview process they really take an interest in finding where you would fit in.

What have you been up to since you joined?

I've worked with two different areas within my team and have been given my own set of responsibilities. Currently we've been busy with half year reporting. I've done some work in Fringe Benefits Tax and Payroll within Accounting Services. The majority of my work is reconciliations, processing journal entries and answering questions from cost centre Managers throughout the organisation about Payroll related costs. I am responsible for the accounting side of payroll.

What's the best thing that's happened to you since you've been at Suncorp?

The grad events over the last few months have been a lot of fun, including a trivia night which was exciting. We did a grad photo shoot was a really different experience as well. Our department had a lovely Christmas lunch and my team had Christmas drinks. I also did the Sunwise volunteer day which was a great (but hot) day.

What are some of the challenges you have faced?

The most challenging thing for me is learning who does what in this large organisation and how it all fits together. I mentioned this to my team leader and she said Suncorp have what she called “Lunch and Learn” sessions, where you can visit other departments and hear about what they do. It is really a matter of asking a lot of questions so people know what answers you are looking for. You get out what you put in.

In three words, how would you describe your team?

Friendly, encouraging and laid-back.

Where do you see yourself within Suncorp in 3 years time?

I will be well into Chartered Accounting studies and taking on more complex tasks. I would like to visit other areas and teams to find out about what they do. Once I have furthered my accounting studies and gained more experience, I would like to be able to make recommendations on the processes we use and improve.

How did the Suncorp Graduate Program preparing you for your future?

The Suncorp Program provides contact with people who have come from many different areas and firms and who are happy to share their experiences. This provides an insight into the industry and helps me plan my future career.
