My Story

Degrees: Bachelor of Commerce
Majors: Actuarial Studies / Financial Economics
Role: Actuarial Analyst

Why did you join Suncorp and the Graduate Program?

I was interested in working in General Insurance and Suncorp provides excellent opportunities in this area because of the diversity of brands and range of products that it sells.  Suncorp is a sponsor of the UNSW Co-op Program and all the scholars who did Industrial Training at Suncorp were very enthusiastic about the type of work they were involved in and the people they worked with here.

Is life at Suncorp everything you thought it would be?

I had a little bit of experience working in General Insurance so I thought I knew what to expect.  But it turned out to be better in reality, because from early on in my role, I experienced a variety of work and collaborated with many different people, both within the actuarial team and outside of actuarial.  I’ve learnt a lot during the process, and much more quickly than I’d originally thought I would before I started.

What have you been up to since you joined?

I have been working in the Personal Lines Competitor Analytics team which looks at how Suncorp compares against our competitors in the insurance market.  This has involved interpreting data, writing reports and plenty of SAS programming.  I’ve learnt a lot about both Suncorp brands and other insurance brands in the process.

What's the best thing that's happened to you since you've been at Suncorp?

What I value most from the time I’ve spent at Suncorp are the opportunities I’ve had to learn from the people in my team.  The people I’ve worked with have always been willing to take time out to teach me what they know and to help me along.  I’ve built great friendships with some caring and fun-loving actuaries along the way.

What are some of the challenges you have faced?

Balancing time spent on work, study and relaxation during the Part III semester was a challenge.  Luckily, Suncorp offers generous study leave allowances and I was able to make good use of those days.  It was also very helpful to have more experienced actuaries to turn to for guidance when I got stuck on a problem.

In three words, how would you describe your team?

Dedicated, cooperative, fun.

Where do you see yourself within Suncorp in 3 years time?

In 3 years time, I hope to have passed some (or with luck, all!) Part III exams and be well on my way to becoming a fully qualified actuary.  I also hope to have contributed in a range of projects in the Suncorp actuarial team, and to be sharing some of the knowledge gained with future graduates starting at Suncorp.

How is the Suncorp Graduate Program preparing you for your future?

Working has Suncorp has given me the opportunity to collaborate with many people and build relationships with them, as well as exposing me to a diverse range of processes, methods, ideas and interpretations.  All of this is continuing to broaden my understanding of what an actuary can really contribute to a business.

Why did you join Suncorp and the Graduate Program?

As one of Australia's largest insurers, Suncorp offers a very competitive actuarial package for graduates. This includes study support, which is almost essential given the cost and intensity of sitting actuarial exams.

Is life at Suncorp everything you thought it would be?

I have been surprised at the level of cooperation and support among the actuarial teams. Although many actuaries tend to be introverted (and Suncorp is no exception!), the spirit of good-humoured professionalism within the department has made working here an absolute pleasure.

What have you been up to since you joined?

I am based with the Corporate Actuarial Team, which is responsible for matters that affect the Suncorp group as a whole. My work has involved a lot of SAS programming (which I learnt on the job) and complicated Excel formulae!

I have worked on a variety of projects since joining. One was a Natural Hazards model, which the department uses to gain a better understanding of catastrophe perils. I have also spent time compiling prudential reports and improving the efficiency of our actuarial processes.

What's the best thing that's happened to you since you've been at Suncorp?

I have been fortunate to work alongside some great people. We regularly have team events and lunches, which reinforce the strong relationships our day-to-day associations build.

Even as a graduate, my input has been valued. I have not merely been issued with instructions to carry out. When asked to redesign some of our prudential reporting spreadsheets, I was given considerable autonomy over how to go about it. This enabled me to show innovation and initiative, to learn more, and to demonstrate that I could make a valuable contribution to my team.

What are some of the challenges you have faced?

Becoming accustomed to the unique terminology used within general insurance was initially quite a challenge. University courses tend to educate students more broadly, so coming to terms with the specifics of this particular field took some time.

Any actuarial student would agree that the qualification program to become an actuary can be quite daunting. However, it can also be rewarding to achieve each small milestone along the way. Working alongside other students who are all in the same boat has created a very supportive and encouraging environment.

In three words, how would you describe your team?

Efficient, Intelligent, Supportive

Where do you see yourself within Suncorp in 3 years time?

The road to becoming a fully-qualified actuary is a long one. In three years I hope to have progressed a fair way through my studies, although there will undoubtedly be further to travel. I hope that what I learn during this time will enable me to make a more wide-ranging contribution to the complex actuarial issues my team encounters.

How is the Suncorp Graduate Program preparing you for your future?

Actuarial work is a highly-specialised field. Suncorp continues to equip me with the practical on-the-job training necessary to become a respected actuary. In addition to the study support offered, simply working with professionals who possess such an intricate knowledge of the insurance industry has proven to be invaluable.
