My Story

    chris Name: Chris
Degree: Bachelor of Business / Bachelor of Science in Information Technology
Majors: Software Engineering / Accounting
Role: Software Engineer

Why did you join Suncorp and the Graduate Program?

Suncorp’s graduate program was different from the others available to me at the time as it allowed me to concentrate on being in a developer role throughout the program instead of rotating between different roles. This way I was able to concentrate on what I like doing best, and therefore focus on developing my programming skills. Suncorp is also a large company which owns many brands, which would give me the opportunity to work on lots of interesting projects across several industries.

Is life at Suncorp everything you thought it would be?

It is actually better than I expected. The IT department demonstrates a lot of forward thinking, taking up open source and Agile across the organisation whilst many other big companies still haven’t to this day. This way I’ve been given lots of opportunities to work with the latest technologies and grow my skills as a Java developer.

What have you been up to since you joined?

Since I’ve joined I have been part of creating GIO’s & InsureMyRide’s CTP online transactional websites using the Spring 3 framework, a mobile ATM locator in Augmented Reality, mobile web apps for several insurance brands and other applications in Java & PHP as well as Drupal.
I am one of those people that like to come up with many ideas and prototype them, and my peers have been very encouraging in letting me do this. This has allowed me to work on many innovative initiatives with the business and marketing which has made my journey lots of fun.

What's the best thing that's happened to you since you've been at Suncorp?

Being able to help turn an idea I had, the mobile Augmented Reality ATM locator, into an actual product that Suncorp customers use. The journey led me to meet people from banking in Brisbane all the way to the Chief Information Officer where I had the opportunity to demonstrate to him my prototype, and all this within just 2 months since I’ve joined.

What are some of the challenges you have faced?

Coming straight from UTS into an enterprise level role in software engineering was quite a difficult transition. The level of knowledge they taught me at University was not near enough to take on such a role, but the help I got from my colleagues was exceptional and I was able to learn within 6 months enough for me to take on my own tasks to complete. Being able to pair with other developers, as well as being sent to several courses in Agile were just some other ways I was able to learn how to do my job well.

In three words, how would you describe your team?

Friendly, collaborative and innovative.

Where do you see yourself within Suncorp in 3 years time?

I see myself in a technical leadership role in the innovation and emerging technologies space, using technology as an enabler for providing the best possible solutions to Suncorp’s customers.

How is the Suncorp Graduate Program preparing you for your future?

I am now able to be a contributing member of a team that can deliver enterprise level software solutions and am getting closer to one day have the ability to lead others in doing so as well.

My Story

 Alexandra    Name: Alexandra
Degree: Bachelor of Information Technology / Bachelor of Education (Secondary)
Majors: Information Systems
Role: Business Analyst

Why did you join Suncorp and the Graduate Program?

I joined Suncorp due to the approachable nature of all staff members. There is a true community spirit that surrounds every building and team you visit. Everyone is interested in helping each other and encouraging positive values.

Is life at Suncorp everything you thought it would be?

Life at Suncorp has exceeded my expectations because in a single year it has provided me with an atmosphere where I have discussions with some of the most influential business men and women in my area, I have had the opportunity to help the community through charity work, but most importantly I have made friends as well as work colleagues.

What have you been up to since you joined?

My first role in Suncorp was testing and ensuring data quality on the Customer Data Integration Hub Project. After I had a good taste of project life I then moved into a team where I had the opportunity to experience a Business Analyst role running initiatives with other graduates. As I was enjoying my role as a Business Analyst, I decided to stay focused on this career path; working on one of the Suncorp group's largest business critical projects, where I am given the opportunity to expand my tools, techniques and skills as a BA.

What's the best thing that's happened to you since you've been at Suncorp?

I was given the opportunity to step out of my comfort zone and become the point of contact for the Data Quality stream on a large customer data project. Although it was a little unnerving - I was supported, mentored and guided through the experience. It was a chance I leapt into and didn't look back.

What are some of the challenges you have faced?

Some of the challenges I have faced include presenting showcases to senior stakeholders and executives; and eliciting requirements with business experts on programs I have never heard of. Although both of these memories seemed daunting at the time I learnt good lessons from each.

In three words, how would you describe your team?

Welcoming, Compassionate, Partners

Where do you see yourself within Suncorp in 3 years time?

I see myself as an experienced Business Analyst sharing my learnings with the new group of graduates that will be joining us.

How is/did the Suncorp Graduate Program preparing you for your future?

The greatest opportunity that the Suncorp Graduate Program provides is the chance to network with everyone across the Group, as well as support for my personal development. I have made friends, workmates and mentors, throughout my rotations on the program, which I will have into the future. As well as the people, the program has helped me gain experience that I will value and appreciate throughout my future in any career I may choose. All of the rotations I have undertaken have not only enhanced my work skill-set and working abilities in a team environment, but have also given me the opportunity to challenge and succeed as an individual.
